A Midsummer Night’s Dream
9 Jan, 2016 @ 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm
The royal court is in upheaval as Theseus, Duke of Athens, prepares to be wedded to the unwilling Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Egeus, loyal servant of the Duke, enlists his help to force his daughter Hermia to be wedded to Demetrius, or face death. Hermia, in love with Lysander, elopes to the forest to be with her love.
However, Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of the Fairies, are locked in a vicious dispute over a little boy whom the fairy queen has adopted. Oberon uses magic love drops to punish Titania, cursing her to fall and love with the first creature she sees upon awakening. The mischievous spirit Puck, in charge of such magic, administers doses to the wrong Athenian lovers, causing all sorts of chaos.
In this midst, a group of Athenian craftsmen are rehearsing for a production to be played before the Duke at his wedding. How will their paths cross in this mysterious wood?
Will love play out naturally? Will these events be consigned to the ruminations of a dream? Find out in Modicum Theatre’s production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
Interpretation: This production is inspired by dystopic dieselpunk, which is inspired by the styles of the diesel era of the 1940s and 50s and adds a distinctly post-apocalyptic feel to those who dwell in the safety of the royal city and those mysterious creatures dwelling in the forest, like survivors of an unknown disaster who have returned to a more basic instinct.
