Be My Baby
14 Jun, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Following the Harbour Theatre smash hits “Ladies Day” and “Ladies Down Under”, Harbour Theatre is thrilled to be presenting another of Amanda Whittington’s insightful and thought provoking plays. “Be My Baby”, set in 1964, follows the fortunes of seven months pregnant but unmarried Mary Adams. Aged 19, Mary is forcibly sent to a ‘Mother and Baby Home’ in the north of England by a hard mother intent on ‘bringing no shame to the family’ and on ‘keeping up appearances’.
Along with the other girls in the home, Mary has to cope with ignorance, bias, and worst of all, the dawning realization that she will have to give the baby up for adoption whether she likes it or not.
Despite all that is against them, the girls youthful enthusiasm and optimism shines through, as they sing the ‘girl-group’ songs of the early sixties.
