Big Maggie

24 May, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Set in a small town in 1950s rural Ireland, John B. Keane’s gripping dark comedy, “Big Maggie”, portrays the struggles of a recently widowed woman, and her desire to assert control over her family, and her own life.

Newly “single” Maggie is seen as a golden opportunity for the local men; however, Big Maggie Polpin is newly awakened, free, and refuses to live by established social and cultural norms. Shaking off the oppressive conventions of religion and marriage, she ignites explosive opposition and fiery confrontation from start to finish.

Full of memorable characters (some lovable, some you love to hate), and dialogue filled with hilarious, caustic putdowns, we watch the indomitable Maggie deal with her feckless family, and those unwelcome suitors.

Everyone wants a piece of Big Maggie, and her property….

This portrait of the Irish mother as sociopath allows Keane unravel the past in front of us, and to see its unfortunate impacts on the future. Premiering in 1969, this compelling portrait of a woman who is determined to take control of her life following the death of her husband, was shocking for its time. Keane painted the dark side of Irish family, and life, that seems now eerily prescient.
