Blithe Spirit

1 Mar, 2014 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

A reading of this play will be conducted on February 21st at 7:30pm at Stirling Theatre for anyone interested in auditioning (this is not a pre-requisite to audition).

Charles Condomine, a successful novelist, wishes to learn about the occult for a novel he is writing and he arranges for an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to hold a séance at his home. Also present in the house are Edith, the maid, and Dr and Mrs Bradman. At the séance, Madame Arcati inadvertently summons Charles’s first wife Elvira, who has been dead for seven years. Madame Arcati leaves after the séance, unaware that she has summoned Elvira. Only Charles can see or hear Elvira. His second wife, Ruth, does not believe that Elvira exists until a floating vase is handed to her out of thin air. The ghostly Elvira makes continued, and increasingly desperate, efforts to disrupt Charles’s current marriage but the consequences are not quite as she had intended.

Described as an improbable farce, the play was written by Noel Coward in 1941 and first performed in that year; thus, I will be setting our production in the 1940s.
