Rottnest After Dark: Capturing the Enemy

19 May, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

“Rottnest After Dark: Capturing the Enemy” is an original theatre production to be performed on Rottnest Island. Based on actual historical accounts, the story follows the journey and experiences of the Prisoners of War who were interned on Rottnest Island with the outbreak of the First World War, taken from their perspective.

The production has been commissioned to commemorate the centenary of the establishment of the POW camp and the memory of the men who were incacerated there from August 1914-November 1915 and who left a rich collection of photographs, paintings and sketches, letters and published accounts. Mostly of German and Austro-Hungarian descent, these men were thrown together as enemy aliens, yet they were just as alien to each other and even more so to this strange but alluring little island off the Western Australian coast.

The play captures the struggles these men had of isolation, uncertaintanty, fear and homesickness, compounded by the horrors o f a war they could not even begin to imagine and a helplessness and frustration of not being able to fight for their country.

Applicants will be required to perform one short monologue of their own choosing (no more than 2-3 minutes) and will be required to perform a monologue from the production which will be provided prior to the audition. Actors who can sing or play an instrument should also prepare a short song (can be unaccompanied) or piece of music.

All applicants must apply for an audition via Helen Munt: hbm@linq.net.au

Males aged between 18 to 50 who have the ability to interchange with different roles. Accents will be required for some parts. Any musical ability (singing or instrument) is desirable.
