An event every week that begins at 7:30pm on Friday and Saturday, repeating until 2 Aug, 2014
“Rottnest After Dark: Capturing the Enemy” is an original theatre production to be performed on Rottnest Island. Based on actual historical accounts, the story follows the journey and experiences of the Prisoners of War who were interned on Rottnest Island with the outbreak of the First World War, taken from their perspective. The production has been commissioned to commemorate the centenary of the establishment of the POW camp and the memory of the men who were incacerated there from August 1914-November 1915 and who left a rich collection of photographs, paintings and sketches, letters and published accounts. Mostly of German and Austro-Hungarian descent, these men were thrown together as enemy aliens, yet they were just as alien to each other and even more so to this strange but alluring little island off the Western Australian coast. The play captures the struggles these men had of isolation, uncertaintanty, fear and homesickness, compounded by the horrors o f a war they could not even begin to imagine and a helplessness and frustration of not being able to fight for their country.
