The Habit of Art

About the Show:

Actors are rehearsing a play about Benjamin Britten sailing close to the wind with his new opera ‘Death in Venice. who is seeking advice from his former friend and collaborator W.H. Auden. D they are observed and interrupted by various characters during this imagined meeting , their first for 25 years. The play is as much about theatre as it is about poetry or art. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men and the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration and ultimately on the habit of art

Available Roles:

Fitz- who plays WH Auden in the play within the play 60 ish
Henry -who plays Benjamin Britten sensitive type 50;s
Donald- the actor, nervous & insecure
Tim- a young actor confident 20’s
Author- any age, frustrated with interference in his writing
Kay- stage manager in play 50’s strong personable m or f
Charlie- boy soprano young
George/Georgina ASM young probably
Joan- Charlie’s chaperone small role
Matt/Matty- sound for play, small role m or f
Tom/Thomasins- rehearsal pianist-
Ralph- dresser , small role
Brian- walk-on role
NOTE: all ages are STAGE AGES

Preparation:

2-3 minute monologue from a play. cold reading from the play script

English accents required, neither ‘common’ not ‘upper-class. “Educated English”
