Community radio personality Dale James will be directing a Neil Simon classic The Sunshine Boys as the third production for Harbour Theatre’s 2017 theatre season.

A delightful revival of Neil Simon’s 1972 comedy about a pair of superannuated vaudevillians Al Lewis and Willie Clark otherwise known as The Sunshine Boys who, despite working together for 43 years, could not stand each other. What’s more they haven’t spoken since Al’s decision to quit the show 11 years ago leaving Willie, a die-hard New York showman to soldier on regardless.

The attempt by Ben, Willie’s nephew (played by Paul Cook), to get the obstinate duo back together one last time for a History of Comedy TV special makes for “one of the great comedies by one of the great American comic writers”. The Sunshine Boys was adapted for a 1975 movie with George Burns as Al and Walter Matthau as Willie for which George Burns won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Award winning actor Tom Rees who plays Willie says “I have been looking forward to playing the cantankerous and stubborn Willie as I am usually cast as the nice or quieter dapper old man. Neil Simon’s scripts are always brilliant and this play is a very funny but also tender reflection on age, getting older and losing one’s sense of identity through forced retirement rather than by choice.”

Best director award winner Dale James who is a familiar voice on Perth’s popular community radio and with over 30 years’ experience in Community Theatre, states she was drawn to this script as she has always been a fan of Neil Simon and enjoys comedy. She continues “The Sunshine Boys has not been performed for some time and am lucky to have a cast who understand the nuances of the script and are able to perform the roles with the right amount of comic timing and pathos”.

“Over the years I have directed for Garrick Theatre, Old Mill Theatre, Playlovers, Grads and the Old Mill however, this is my first time directing for Harbour Theatre and I am looking forward to the chance to bring Neil Simon’s fabulous comedy to the stage at Camelot?

Rex Gray who plays Al states “I am looking forward to working with Dale James who is a well- respected director and actor in community theatre. I enjoy comedy very much and the chance to perform in one of Neil Simon’s classic plays is something I have wanted to do for a long time.”

Supported by Maree Stedul, David Armstrong and David Bridge The Sunshine Boys plays on July 21, 22, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29 @ 7.30pm with matinees at 2.00pm on July 23 and 30.
